Speculative futures for more-than-human worlds
Out of Office
A speculative design and futures workshop
“Hard times are coming, when we’ll be wanting the voices of writers who can see alternatives to how we live now, can see through our fear-stricken society and its obsessive technologies to other ways of being, and even imagine real grounds for hope.”
– Ursula K Le Guin
We Create Futures and Associate Professor Anne Galloway present a one-day workshop to imagine futures beyond human-centred design and challenge the idea of human exceptionalism.
Participants will address an issue in more-than-human worlds as a way to question the role of design, stimulate creativity and broaden horizons when thinking about the future. The workshop will provide a safe, playful environment to use futures studies and speculative design to explore possible futures through objects and services.
Who’s it for?
This is a fast-paced, hands-on workshop where you will work in a team to propose a speculative future. It would benefit anyone actively engaged in future-oriented design, innovation and strategy, although none-of these are prerequisites for the workshop. You will be required to have an open, curious mind and be happy working in a team.
At the end of the day we will celebrate with a small, table-top exhibition and reflections on the process and our achievements.
